Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover: Book Review

"Heart Bones" is a powerful mix of romance and emotional struggle. It examines themes of vulnerability, strength, and the complexities of love. Hoover's skillful storytelling stands out in this standalone novel, creating a gripping and profound narrative.

Plot Intricacies

Heart Bones follows the story of Beyah Grim, a young woman whose life is marked by the gruesome realities of poverty and neglect. Barely managing to balance life as it is, her entire world is thrown into turmoil by the sudden and unexpected death of her mother. This leaves Beyah with only one choice - to spend her last summer before college with a father whom she barely knows on the picturesque, but starkly different Padre Island.

It is on the island where Beyah meets a young man by the name of Samson, whose innate aloofness and surprising depth draw her into a summer romance, which can finally start her on the road to self discovery and healing.

But this would be a Colleen Hoover novel if everything just ended there. As Beyah and Samson begin to grow closer and share their innermost vulnerabilities and painful truths, they begin to harbor secrets, which threaten to unravel the fleeting threads of trust they’ve began to build.

Set against the backdrop of a coastal paradise, the revelations of the young couple mirrors the natural ebb and flow of the ocean, which surrounds them - sometimes calm, sometimes stormy, but always moving towards greater depths.

Thematic Exploration

Colleen Hoover masterfully draws upon several profound themes in Heart Bones, the most prominent of which is vulnerability - both Beyah and Samson’s journeys revolve around confronting their innermost fears and opening old scars.

The vulnerability theme is heavily intertwined with that of resilience, as both youths are also tested by the revelations of their pasts, which threaten to either break them or challenge them enough to grow, evolve, and embrace the uncertain nature of life.

Another key theme in the novel is the drastic socioeconomic contrast between Beyah’s world and the world of Padre Island. This disparity is not a mere backdrop to the story, but an element, which constantly influences Beyah’s interactions with others, as well as her self-perception.

The novel also touches upon themes of familial bonds, loss, and the redemptive power of love, making it a story that most of us can deeply relate to.

Character Development

One of the things we absolutely loved in Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover was the character development of Beyah from a hardened survivor to a hopeful young woman, learning to open her heart despite the risks of getting hurt again.

Samson is not that far behind, when it comes to layered character development. Starting as an enigmatic, but detached figure, he gradually reveals layers of complexity and tenderness that made us care for him deeply. His entire arc is, in our opinion, a master class on exploration of the masks people wear to shield themselves from the world, and the courage it takes to let them finally fall.

Their growth, both individually and together, is depicted with such stark realism, that it resonated with difficult experiences from our own pasts, making us realise that much like Beyah and Samson, we’re all flawed in a way, yet we all also deserve redemption. And that’s the power behind Colleen Hoover’s writing.

Emotional and Literary Impact

Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover is one of those books that is so relatable at its core that it leaves a lasting emotional impact in anyone who reads it. Her writing manages to convey deep emotional truths through simple, yet powerful use of language, especially evident in the dialogues between Beyah and Samson, which beautifully capture the intensity and heartwarming power of experience your first love, coupled with the pain and heart-wrenching struggle of revealing your true self to them.

Without spoiling too much, we can say novel’s climax, which involves a critical revelation about Samson’s past, is handled with both sensitivity and grace, avoiding needless melodrama, while at the same time providing a truly cathartic resolution to the built-up tension up to that point.

It is a satisfying conclusion to a summer filled with bittersweet emotions, leaving readers to reflect on their own emotional journeys, and the transformative power of love and acceptance, both from others and from yourself.

Overall, Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover speaks tenderly to the core of human experience - highlighting the beauty and pain of opening yourself up to life, and embracing its unpredictable complexities.
